When it comes to density it’s important to remember that higher numbers don’t necessarily mean a firmer mattress. What density really tells us is the quality of the foam and the durability & lifetime.

Typically FOAM MATTRESSES featuring higher densities tend to be heavier and more solid. Lower densities, on the other hand, are lighter and easier to move around. However, with higher densities, you can often expect the increase in the compression of material to provide better durability.

Density & Firmness

Many people mistakenly believe that a higher mattress density alone is an indication that a foam mattress will be harder and firmer than one with lower mattress foam density. In fact, a dense mattress can provide quite a bit of body contouring and pressure-point relief. The foam Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) – and not density – is what determines mattress firmness, as well as how much weight is required to indent it.

The Numbers Behind Foam Density

Also known as mattress foam density, this phrase refers to the mass of a cubic metre section of a mattress measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m3). To calculate the density of a piece of foam, you divide the weight of the foam by its width x height x length. Density is expressed by the weight per cubic foot. 

In summary and to understand the coding system for foam density: A foam that weighs 23 kilograms per cubic metre and requires a force of 130 Newton 's to compress it to 40% of its original height therefore has a code of 23/130.

Heavier adults and foam density …

If you carry a lot of weight, density will impact your level of comfort and the durability of the foam mattress you choose. Heavier people obviously sink into the material more deeply, and you want to find a foam mattress with a high expectation of durability.
